Happy New Year!
Can you believe 2014 is already upon us? So far 2014 is off to a tremendous start for AMPS. We have some exciting news to share:
We would like to welcome Shamra Tankersley as the newest member of the AMPS Board of Directors.
Shamra is a former elementary school teacher, mother of two children currently in our local Malibu schools, and stepmom of three children, all of whom attended Malibu schools. She has been an active supporter of the Boys and Girls Club of Malibu for the past three years.
Recap of 2013
A lot happened in the past year! AMPS has accomplished some significant milestones which will aid in achieving our goal of an independent, locally controlled Malibu Unified School District. But first we would like to thank all of our supporters and endorsers, for without them we would not have made as much progress as we have over the past year. Nevertheless, some of the major milestones we accomplished are:
- First, we completed two separate WestEd studies, confirming both the feasibility of a Malibu Unified School District and defining a clear pathway to reaching this end goal.
- Second, we hired our first full-time staffer, Alexia Burton, and established our home base in a new office in the Civic Center area.
- Third, we have held several Town Hall meetings and information events, and have coordinated with various other local Malibu organizations such as the Kiwanis of Malibu at its annual Chili Cook-Off, and the City of Malibu and Malibu Urgent Care at the annual Malibu Halloween Carnival.
- Fourth, we have improved our website making it the hub of all local Malibu schools information. Please check it out: www.ampsmalibu.org
- Finally and most importantly, we have expanded our outreach throughout the local Malibu community by reaching our goal of over 1,000 supporters. Please like us on Facebook or go to our website and endorse us and demonstrate your support!
These are huge steps forward. We have big plans for 2014 and we'll keep you apprised of our progress.
Thank you again for your continuing support. We greatly appreciate everything the community has done and continues to do!
Sincerely,
Craig Foster AMPS President

The Key to Success?.... Grit. May 2013, by Angela Lee Duckworth, Ted Talks
Leaving a high-flying job in consulting, Angela Lee Duckworth took a job teaching math to seventh graders in a New York public school. She quickly realized that IQ wasn’t the only thing separating the successful students from those who struggled. Here, she explains her theory of “grit” as a predictor of success.
At the University of Pennsylvania, Angela Lee Duckworth studies intangible concepts such as self-control and grit to determine how they might predict both academic and professional success.
